Ichigo fights Hiyori while trying to suppress his inner Hollow but she is prepared to do everything she can to force him to release it. Ichigo has begun training with the Visoreds in order to learn how to suppress his inner hollow. He enters his inner world and is greeted by the mirror image of himself holding a white Zangetsu.

The two cross swords and release their Bankai simultaneously. Ichigo is forced to fight a more powewrful version of himself, which could be his most formidable opponent yet. Ichigo has entered his inner world and is blocking fierce attacks made by another Ichigo who wields a white Zangetsu.

Ichigo is cornered as images of Byakuya Kuchiki and Jin Kariya pummel him into the ground. Kenpachi Zaraki appears and tells Ichigo to be candid about his desire to fight and questions his determination. If Aizen is able to create the key, Karakura Town will be destroyed. Orihime visits Ichigo during his Visored training to inform him of this shocking discovery. Ichigo and his friends undergo exhaustive training in preparation for the upcoming winter showdown with Sosuke Aizen. Kisuke summons Orihime to his underground training facility where she finds Chad sparring with Renji.

Captain Hitsugaya's advance troops remain in Karakura Town to prepare for the showdown with Sosuke Aizen. Rangiku is fascinated by life in the world of the living, and she finds it impossible to devote her time to training. Leaving her boy-crazy gigai behind, Rangiku arrives at the coordinates to intercept the Hollow. Rangiku saves a young soul named Shota from being attacked by a Mock Arrancar.

Meanwhile, the Mock Arrancar has returned and seems to be multiplying. Shota abandoned Yui out of fear and blames himself for the entire incident. Rangiku finds it suspicious that Yui appears to be fine despite having been attacked by an Arrancar. Meanwhile, Hitsugaya is in pursuit of the Mock Arrancar within the residential district when he encounters an injured soul. It is revealed that the Mock Arrancar gained an explosive amount of strength when it devoured Yui and has reanimated her soul to use her as bait to lure and attack human souls.

While the Mock Arrancar attempts to absorb Shota's soul, it is met with a counterstrike from Rangiku. Rukia and Chad take on Shrieker, a vicious Hollow who's beaten many Soul Reapers and committed many crimes. But with Rukia's diminished powers and Chad's inability to see Hollows, they haven't got much of a chance without Ichigo.

At a Soul Reaper supply shop, Rukia picks up a modified soul to take over Ichigo's body while he's pulling Soul Reaper duty. But the mod soul takes off with Ichigo's body, determined to have a little fun! Rukia and Ichigo track Ichigo's body to a local elementary school. While Ichigo struggles with the mischievous soul inhabiting his body, Rukia receives word of a Hollow sighting nearby, but is unable to confirm its location.

On the anniversary of his mother's death, Ichigo intends to take the day off from Soul Reaper duties and visit her grave with the rest of his family. But Rukia is at the cemetery waiting for him, and when she hears how his mother died, she suggests that the Hollow that came after him may have been responsible for his mother's death.

Ichigo faces the Grand Fisher, a Hollow that uses a lure in the shape of a little girl, who Ichigo recalls with shock as the same girl he saw when his mother died. He attacks the Hollow in a rage, making him an easy target, but Rukia, who comes to rescue him, is no match for the Hollow without her powers.

When television hero Don Kanonji schedules a live recording of his hit show "Spirit Hunter" at a local abandoned hospital, Ichigo is surprised to see that an actual demi-Hollow is being summoned for the show. But Ichigo soon realizes that Don Kanonji's methods are downright dangerous, and he steps in to save the day.

Rumors spread about Ichigo and Rukia's relationship when they keep disappearing from school to respond to Hollow alerts. Overworked and frustrated, Ichigo is unaware that one of his classmates, Uryu Ishida, possesses spiritual power of his own, and, not to mention, hates Soul Reapers! In order to prove how useless Soul Reapers are, Uryu releases bait to draw Hollows to their town.

Whoever gets rid of the most wins the challenge. But soon Hollows are everywhere, including one that threatens Chad and Ichigo's sister. Orihime is paid a visit by a Hollow at school and discovers her own spiritual powers as she tries to defend her classmates, who the Hollow has turned against her.

In the midst of their battle, Ichigo finds out that Uryu is a Quincy, beings with a long-standing rivalry with Soul Reapers. But with the Hollow attacks increasing and the appearance of the gargantuan Menos Grande, the two must put aside their differences and fight together to save their town. Rukia worries that news of Ichigo's battle with Menos Grande will attract the attention of the Soul Society. Amidst the ordinary activities of everday school life, she and Uryu each find themselves feeling more and more out of place.

Rukia, wandering the streets at night, runs into two Soul Reapers from the Soul Society, Renji Abarai and her brother, Byakuya Kuchiki, who censure her for giving her powers to a human. Move about freely in the world of Bleach!
