Replies PudgyOne 8 Krypton. I am a Dell user, just like you are. Yes I have and I don't have a drivers disk so I have to download it off of the website. DellRockstar Welcome to Dell Community!

Post Reply. Top Contributor. Dell Support Resources. I couldn't find anything related to modem or modem driver If someone has ANY idea which driver to download, kindly tell me! No, no, no. Since I don't have your service tag, my image is not specific to your machine, rather it shows all drivers for C's.

BTW, the "J" in the hand symbol in my first image. I hope you got the image so far At the extreme bottom of that page, there was a device named "Mini PCI device" whose status was "Not installed". It seems to be inactive. So the conclusion that I have got so far is that there's something wrong with the hardware. I'll check the "communication" drivers at the link provided, and post very soon I wanna say, Thank you so much for helping me.

I know that you all would be quite fed up with this unique laptop modem problem, but i'm getting some solutions day by day. I have visited the Dell website for my Laptop's modem driver. I gave the service tag and got the required driver. Now I'm downloading it. Hope it works! I'll post the results soon Hatryst you can not beat this site for help. Merry Christmas. I just went back and looked at your posts in this thread because I have this nagging suspicion that either something critical was left out of the details or I myself overlooked something.

Dell has made both models, so which is it? Did you run the Dell "System Configuration Tool? I linked to it in one of my posts, but you never said if you ran it or not.

Go to this page , scroll a little down, and when you come to the "System Configuration Tool" link, click on it and it will take you to the page where it asks for your Service Tag to go further. Once there, type in your Service Tag and click on continue. Click on the "Original System Configuration" tab. You will see a lengthy list this is what equipment your machine was originally shipped with that's rather cryptic, and it will give the part and part description that's the cryptic part. Scroll down the list and look for anything that may be a clue to the PCI modem that your device manager is indicating you have.

If you see something that catches your eye. Post your service tag number here, and I'll look for it. Click on the "Current System Configuration" tab on that same page.

I have no idea how this will work, since I don't have a Dell, but it should display a result showing how your machine is currently equipped.

It might enable you to see the make and model number of the modem that is in there now. It may be the same as what it was shipped with, but since you said you bought the thing "used", the previous owner may have cracked the case and put another one in there.

Though in laptops, modems are not cards like on desktops, they're integrated in the mother board. Let's find out how your machine is currently equipped with some other tools besides Dell and Device Manager. Use the "run" option in the download window instead of the "save" option, then follow the onscreen instructions "I agree" and all that. After the install wizard does its business and one of the things it will do is put a Belarc icon on your desktop , and after it analyzes your computer which may take some time so wait , a Belarc "Computer Profile Summary" will pop up in your browser.

This is what you want. Scroll down a little, and on the left hand side you're looking for a heading that will say "Communications". Under that heading the modem you have should be listed the screenshot below is from mine, so your modem may be different.

MSinfo - Click on "Start" and then in the right panel that pops up, click on "Run". Type in "msinfo32" without the quotes and click on OK. In the screen that comes up "System Information" , expand "Components" in the left pane and click on "Modem".

In the right pane you should see your modem info:. If we can find out info on your modem, maybe we can find the driver. The Dell utility should have found it, so I can only assume that the previous owner put a different one in there. And it may be a BIOS issue too. And if it turns out that the modem is fried we may end up doing more diagnostics to figure that out , you can always get a PCMCIA modem that will go in your card slot s.

Thanx for such detailed info I'll check the details and post back soon I'm concerned about one thing. My laptop might not have a modem in it But the miniPCI device cannot be selected and its written "not installed" LH you said that i should check my bios that it is enabled.

Can you please tall me on which page should i look for it? Before you try to crack the case, run those diagnostics I spoke of. They may very well make it unnecessary to crack the case. If these tools report that a modem is not present, then it's a pretty good bet that you don't have one. And if the BIOS selection for a modem is grayed out, that's also an indication that you don't have one. That's very unusual, because as I said, laptop modems have the modem integrated into the mother board, so Dell would have had to swap it out of the standard shelf model.

I don't even know if they do that. Maybe they can order a mother board from Taiwan that is equipped or I should say "not equipped" that way. Unless you are very experienced with laptop hardware or have done it before, cracking a case is VERY risky.

And can you post a screenshot of your Device Manager view. Did you get a message? Well ok I wont crack the case. I'll try to have a look at the utilities first I'm consulting a computer genius he will do the opening of case and stuff He modified the driver script and forced it to install the driver listed under the DELL Tag downloads.

But now an error appears when i try to connect dial-up internet. The error is: Error The modem or other connecting device is already in use or is not configured properly. Also if i go to the "properties" of the modem and under the "diagnostics" tab, click Query Modem, an error appears: The port that the modem is attached could not be opened.

This may be the result of a hardware conflict. Check the device manager to verify all devices are functional.

I never attached a screenshot in this forum before, hope these screenshots appear! I am also attaching the screenshot for my bios. Plz also guide me how to add screenshots from my computer I can't find the link on this site where somebody posted instructions on how to do screenshots I know there was one somewhere.

I think whs did it , so I'll give you instructions in my own words here:. Take the screenshot with whatever software you use and save the shot somewhere on your computer desktop is always an easy place to find later. Go to one of the image hosting sites on the internet photobucket, imageshack, tinypic, etc. They will give you "code" lists, and one of them will be for posting images in forums. Here are examples:. I've left out a lot of basics on these instructions, like "click here" and "click there" stuff, 'cause I don't know your experience level.

If you need me to be more detailed, just ask. That msinfo or Belarc listing or Dell System Config may be the actual hardware, though it may read off the driver too. I'm not sure. So, we still need to determine if in fact you have any internal modem again, try those utilities I listed , and if not. Thanx for the info about screenshots. I understood everything.

Thank you for such detailed info.
