Garmin nuvi 660 update

The Does anyone have any hard reference or personal experience that a gmapprom. Thanks, -cj. We already established this upthread. I don't care to have just certain regions installed. Using a 4 GB card will allow you to put the full map on the card, but your unit may not read a file larger than 2GB. Sadly, the nuvi has a much more convoluted way to be able to install City Navigator North America. The nuvi can only read files under 2GB in size and the current You will still need the SD card and 4GB is a good size for this task, but the SD card size doesn't overcome the 2GB filesize limit of the old nuvi A quick summary of what you'll find in the above link--in case I miss a detail, believe what's in the above link.

Most of what applies to you appears on pages of the link, but you'll want to understand page 1, too:. The map file will be called gmapprom. The map file will be named gmapsupp. If that is the case Which I gladly selected. How would I have selected this, then go back and select the remainder of NA Mexico, islands? This is the part I can't clearly understand Then what would be the naming convention of the two map files on same SD card? I'm trying to get my head wrapped around the operational steps to download 2 separate files using Express..

For "Next" time I don't own a so I base my answers on what I've read here and hope that I remember correctly. If this is correct, the only way to get all of North America installed for use with a is to have some of the map in the nuvi gmapprom. I think it's time to upgrade Ever price a motorcycle GPS? I have a Zumo motorcycle GPS, the maps outgrew the unit a long time ago.

As outlined within this thread I simply download the largest that will fit onto the unit and the rest of what I need onto the SD card.

The maps work seamlessly when the unit switches over from the card to the unit and vice versa. For ho hos, I just updated my old 's maps to Last update it took all that were available. I had previously deleted all the un-needed voice and help files. There is a list here somewhere of what you can delete. I know I am using a dinosaur for a GPS, but my old Nuvi works fine except that I can no longer get the latest maps to fit on the internal memory of the device itself.

I understand there's a way to put the updated maps on an SD card. What I can't seem to figure out despite reading many posts about this is exactly what files need to reside in the internal memory and what need to reside on the SD card so that the Nuvi will read the latest updated maps from the SD card. The easiest way maybe to use Alanb's cloning method. IMO, cloning is not the best choice on the nuvi because there is a 2 GB file size limit on that device.

So if you want the full NA map, the file is bigger than 2 GB so the map has to be split in two pieces. The best way to do that is to use Garmin Express to install the map to your computer only, then run MapInstall twice Alternatively, when you run Garmin Express, you can select a smaller region like Eastern States only that will fit in internal storage, but be sure to select the option to install to both device and computer. Then run MapInstall one time to install the remaining regions to SD card.

By the way Welcome to POI Factory. There is lots of good information here and lots of helpful folks. Stick around a while. Canada 3. Canada 5. Canada Mexico 4. Canada Europe 3. Canada Europe 4. Bluetooth for hands-free cell phone use — Generally speaking, the sound quality has gotten much better on recent models, but check the reviews the first column links to these as it does vary. If they ever post it! Your map update method works great. I then renamed the files as you suggested and plugged the SD card into the nuvi. It saw the new map on the SD card right away and loaded it up.

This is a great way to do the updates. I didn't see any slow down in loading the maps from the SD card. I checked afterwards to make sure it was seeing the Thanks a bunch. It saw the SD card as the Nuvi, just like it did last week I first did not put it in the nuvi , and verified existing maps So took it out to the car, and did a 15 min ride, verifying that routes, POI's Everything worked The connection occurred easily, Garmin suggested I take a walk because GE would take care of everything I did and it did.

GE initially suggested loading all of Very happy with results. Garmin's interim programs, e. It did this all with the SD card, the Nuvi was in corner, in the case, un-plugged. This is great information!! I am working on this FAQ Thanks Ditto, even though I don't see a need for a while to try it, I'm glad it's there for us, especially since my is one of the models not offered the Garmin-auto-install-to-SD option.

Being a owner, I am interested in possibly doing this at some point. I do have one question. Rather than renaming the map files on the SD card, will it work to just delete the corresponding old map files on the main unit?

By leaving the old map files on the main unit, won't the nuvi see 2 map versions available? I'm looking to be able to free up the internal memory space by deleting the old version map files. On these older nuvi's, map name gmapprom is only recognized in internal storage, not on the SD card. The name gmapsupp is recognized in either location. Some nuvi models have had a firmware update to also recognize the name gmapsup1, but I don't think the 6xx series is one of them.

You can delete the original map files gmapprom from internal storage once you are operating with new maps on the SD card. With my 2 nuvi's if both map sets are left in place, the nuvi only recognizes the newer version and displays only the new map in Map Info. This behavior may be different on your Maybe JanJ will chime in here. It is the base map and needs to remain in internal storage.

OK, thanks! Right now, my maps are on the internal memory and my mp3's are on the SD card. I was thinking to swap them around.

As a test after loading the new map to the SD card and renaming them as you indicated, I could rename the internal map files to something like gmapprom. That way I haven't deleted anything yet and the shouldn't recognize the renamed files. If this works, then updating maps in the future will be much faster using the SD card in my laptop's card reader slot than over the 's slow USB1 connector. It took me longer to install the maps on the than it did to download them. Can it safely be deleted?

You can delete any. They are checksum files created by running the checksum diagnostic from the advanced diagnostics menu. You will probably find. They can all be deleted.

Way faster than when I did it through the USB1 port. It started up the way it normally does after installing new maps - it displays "Loading maps It never gets to the screen where I enter my pin.

So I remove the SD card and power it up again. This time it loads the maps normally, gets to the screen where I enter my pin and it goes to the main screen. Maybe this is because I already had I did it this way a couple days ago because the whole NA map would not fit. Home Improvement. Real Estate. Submit An Article. Privacy Policy. Contact Us.
